Biutiful

All I can say is…

…wow.

Javier Bardem, a truly under utilized actor in Hollywood, gave the performance of his career in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful. He plays Uxbal, one of the most tragic characters developed in recent memory for the big screen.

Uxbal is diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and wants to set things right before he leaves this earth. But no matter how much good he tries to do, whether it’s reuniting with his ex-wife, helping families who’ve lost loved ones or taking care of his workers, he just can’t make things better.

Biutiful shows what happens inside a downward spiral: loss, death, unhappiness, loneliness. Inarritu does all this quite beautifully (excuse the pun) with the film’s music and exceptional cinematography of Barcelona.

The movie is dark. The movie is depressing. The movie is tragically beautiful. I don’t think Bardem will win the Oscar, but I think he deserves it. His portrayal of Uxbal is one that sticks with you long after the credits have rolled. Days later, I’m still thinking about his performance.

He was breathtaking.
