Machine Head – “Unto the Locust”

I’ve got to tell you something.

I’m big on Machine Head right now. Actually, I’ve been big on Machine Head for a while. I’ve always been a fan, but for some reason, recently I’ve just listened to Machine Head and Machine Head only.

Yes, The Blackening came out in 2007. Four years later, it was on constant rotation in the soundtrack of my life.

Then, September 27th, 2011 came along, and that soundtrack got an update.

All of a sudden, Machine Head’s latest album Unto the Locust was the only thing I could listen to…it was what I played constantly and what I found myself humming to walking down the hall.

It consumed me…and still is consuming me.

Whether you’re a die-hard Machine Head fan or just getting to the party, I’m confident you’ll be consumed by their seventh full-length studio album just as I am.

Opening with the incredibly eerie and powerful “I Am Hell [Sonata in C#]“, the album doesn’t disappoint. From beginning to finish, the music creates a new world for you to escape into, whether you need it or not. It might be background music for your daily routine, it might be the sole focus of what you’re doing…either way, Unto the Locust gets inside of you and it doesn’t leave.

The highlight of the album? Without a doubt, the highlight is smack dab in the middle with the fifth track, “Darkness Within.”

Some might feel this is a bit of a departure for Machine Head; I couldn’t disagree more. This song is the one that I constantly find myself going back to…it’s raw, it’s intense, it’s real. The only thing that makes it even rawer is the acoustic version that is included in the deluxe edition of the album. This song is one that will stand the test of time.

Other highlights include the title track, “This is the End,” and “Who We Are.” You know what? The entire album is a highlight. Front to back, start to finish, first track to last track…Unto the Locust delivers like no album has delivered in a long time.

Easily one of the best albums of 2011, go out and pick up your copy of Roadrunner Records’ Unto the Locust. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
